At an attitude of 1650 m, located at the edge of the side of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, Sa Pa is one of the most picturesque and tranquil locations in all of Vietnam.
Description:
Once a French hill station, the area is home to a number of ethnic minority communities, including the Black H’Mong and Red Dzao, among others. Sa Pa’s breathtaking beauty comes in the form hills, valleys, mountains, streams and waterfalls, not to mention the warmth of the locals. Of particular interest to many are the daily activities of the tribal peoples of the area, which are on display at the markets and in various surrounding villages.
A couple of days spent in this hilly paradise with leave you refreshed and with a real appreciation for Vietnam’s north. Sa Pa and its surroundings offer particularly rich ground for trekking. The natural beauty of the area is unparalleled and can be seen in rich greenery, gorgeous waterfalls and the unique ethnic minority villages that dot the countryside. An afternoon’s hike through this area can be a truly enlightening experience.

Day 1: Lao Cai – Sa Pa

Summary:
Bac Ha is another of the gems of Vietnam’s north. At a lower altitude than Sa Pa, it’s not as spectacularly beautiful, but it’s still scenic and also much less touristy.
Description:
The real draw to Bac Ha is the vibrant Sunday market attended by local Flower H’Mong, Tay, Dao, Nung and Giay ethnic minorities. In all, there are ten different ethnic minority groups who live in and around Bac Ha, and a visit to the market is a great way to introduce yourself to their way of life. You could haggle for a pig, a chicken, a water buffalo or perhaps just some handicrafts and some of the renowned local wine. Either way, you’re sure to be charmed by the city and its famously friendly people.
